  1. Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables · 3 marks

Five years ago Anil was three times as old as his daughter Meera. Ten years from now he will be twice as old as her. Find their present ages.

    Worked answer

    \(A - 5 = 3(M - 5)\) and \(A + 10 = 2(M + 10)\), i.e. \(A - 3M = -10,\ A - 2M = 10\) M1
    Subtracting: \(M = 20\) A1
    \(A = 50\): Anil 50 years, Meera 20 years A1

  2. Triangles · 5 marks

    In \(\triangle ABC\), \(D\) is a point on \(BC\) such that \(\angle BAD = \angle BCA\). \(AB = 6\) cm, \(BC = 9\) cm and \(AC = 7.5\) cm. (a) Prove that \(\triangle BAD \sim \triangle BCA\). (b) Find \(BD\), \(DC\) and \(AD\).

    Worked answer

    (a) \(\angle B\) common and \(\angle BAD = \angle BCA\): \(\triangle BAD \sim \triangle BCA\) (AA) A1
    (b) \(\dfrac{BA}{BC} = \dfrac{BD}{BA} = \dfrac{AD}{CA}\) M1
    \(BD = \dfrac{6^2}{9} = 4\) cm A1
    \(DC = 9 - 4 = 5\) cm A1
    \(AD = \dfrac{6}{9} \times 7.5 = 5\) cm A1

  3. Coordinate Geometry · 3 marks

The centre of a circle is \(C(-2, 3)\) and one end of a diameter is \(A(4, -5)\). Find the other end of the diameter and the radius of the circle.

    Worked answer

    \(C\) is the mid-point of \(AB\): \(\dfrac{4 + x}{2} = -2,\ \dfrac{-5 + y}{2} = 3\) M1
    \(B(-8, 11)\) A1
    Radius \(= CA = \sqrt{36 + 64} = 10\) units A1
