Polynomials · 3 marks
If \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) are the zeroes of \(3x^2 + 4x - 7\), find the value of \(\dfrac1\alpha + \dfrac1\beta - 2\alpha\beta\).
Worked answer
\(\alpha + \beta = -\dfrac43,\ \alpha\beta = -\dfrac73\) B1
\(\dfrac1\alpha + \dfrac1\beta = \dfrac{\alpha+\beta}{\alpha\beta} = \dfrac47\) M1
\(\dfrac47 + \dfrac{14}{3} = \dfrac{110}{21}\) A1Arithmetic Progressions · 2 marks
For the AP \(7, 3, -1, -5, \ldots\), find \(a_{42} - a_{27}\) without finding the two terms.
Worked answer
\(a_{42} - a_{27} = (a + 41d) - (a + 26d) = 15d\) M1
\(= 15 \times (-4) = -60\) A1Statistics · 2 marks
For a grouped distribution of the heights (in cm) of students, \(a = 150\), \(h = 5\), \(\sum f_iu_i = 12\) and \(\sum f_i = 40\). Find the mean height.
Worked answer
\(\bar x=150+5\times\dfrac{12}{40}\) M1
\(=150+1.5=151.5\) cm A1
