Boards + JEE maths: a study plan for Class 11 and 12
One plan for the board exam and JEE (or CUET) maths, so the same chapters serve both. It is a guide for the school year, not a timetable: move the phases to fit your school and coaching.
Three rules
- Learn each chapter once, for both exams. NCERT and the board-style questions first, then JEE-style questions on the same chapter while it is fresh.
- Class 11 counts. Many JEE Main maths questions are on Class 11 chapters that the Class 12 board exam does not test, so they need regular revision in Class 12.
- The board exam gets its own weeks. Board answers are marked step by step; switch to board papers and full written answers in the weeks before the board exams.
Class 11
| When | Focus |
|---|---|
| Term 1 | Sets, relations and functions, trigonometric functions, complex numbers. Each chapter: NCERT, then the Class 11 chapter page, then the JEE-style set. |
| Term 2 | Permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences and series, straight lines, conic sections, limits and derivatives, statistics and probability. |
| Before the school exam | School exam first: Class 11 Route to 95. Keep one JEE-style set a week going. |
| Summer before Class 12 | Revise the Class 11 chapters that JEE uses most (see the chapter map) and do every Class 11 set again, timed. |
Class 12
| When | Focus |
|---|---|
| Term 1 | Relations and functions, inverse trigonometric functions, matrices, determinants, continuity and differentiability, application of derivatives. One Class 11 chapter revised each week alongside. |
| Term 2 | Integrals, application of integrals, differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, probability (and linear programming for the board exam and CUET). Start timed sets every fortnight. |
| Before JEE Main session 1 | If JEE Main runs in two sessions again, the first comes before the board exams. Timed sets weekly; redo every mistake. |
| Board exam weeks | Board only: Class 12 sample papers, official board papers and the Route to 95, with the Class 12 exam strategy guides. Dates: CBSE exam dates. |
| After the boards | Back to JEE (and JEE Advanced or CUET): timed sets, official past papers and your mistake list. |
A normal school week
- Four days: the current chapter, NCERT plus board-style questions.
- Two days: JEE-style questions on the same chapter, plus one older chapter.
- One day: a timed set or a full chapter test, then redo the mistakes.
Build your own week with the study planner, and keep your wrong answers in My mistakes.
Questions students and parents ask
How should I split time between boards and JEE?
Learn each chapter once, for both: NCERT and the board-style questions first, then JEE-style practice on the same chapter. Most weeks can be about two-thirds chapter learning and board practice and one-third JEE-style practice. In the weeks before the board exams, switch to board papers and answer-writing only.
When should I start JEE preparation?
At the start of Class 11 if you can: Class 11 chapters (complex numbers, sequences, conic sections, permutations) make up a large part of JEE Main maths and are not in the Class 12 board exam, so they need their own revision time in Class 12.
Does this plan work for CUET too?
Yes. CUET maths is mostly Class 12, so the Class 12 part of the plan covers it; add the CUET-style timed sets in the last months.
CBSE Math Revision is independent and not affiliated with NTA, the IITs or CBSE. Exam details marked to confirm are from the exam bodies' published documents but have not yet been re-checked against the current edition: always follow the official information bulletin.
