Exercise 6.1: Similar figures
What it tests. Two polygons with the same number of sides are similar when their corresponding angles are equal and their corresponding sides are in the same ratio. Both conditions are needed (except for triangles).
Similar figures, the Basic Proportionality Theorem (Thales) and its converse, and the AAA, SSS and SAS similarity criteria. Our own step-by-step solutions to Exercises 6.1 to 6.3, one page per exercise, set out for step marks.
Each exercise has its own page with every question solved step by step. Pick the one you are on.
What it tests. Two polygons with the same number of sides are similar when their corresponding angles are equal and their corresponding sides are in the same ratio. Both conditions are needed (except for triangles).
What it tests. BPT: a line parallel to one side of a triangle, cutting the other two sides, divides them in the same ratio: \(\dfrac{AD}{DB} = \dfrac{AE}{EC}\). Converse: if a line divides two sides in the same ratio, it is parallel to the third side.
What it tests. AAA (or AA): two angles equal. SSS: all three sides in the same ratio. SAS: one angle equal and the sides including it in the same ratio. Always write the vertices in corresponding order.
