CBSE Class 10 Maths: Basic or Standard? (2026-27)

If you are in Class 10 in 2026-27, you still choose between Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic for the 2027 board exams. Both are on the same syllabus; the papers differ. Here is what CBSE says, in plain words, and a two-minute self-check.

Last checked against CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum on 5 October 2026. CBSE Math Revision is independent and not affiliated with CBSE. If anything here differs from a newer CBSE notice or from your school, follow CBSE and the school.

Not the 2028 change. Class 10 students in 2026-27 (board exam in 2027) stay on the existing scheme and may opt for Mathematics Basic. CBSE is discontinuing the Basic and Standard levels after them. The one common paper and the optional Mathematics Advanced paper start with the 2028 board exams (today's Class 9): what changes in 2028.

The marks by type of question (with CBSE's approximate percentages) are from CBSE's 2026-27 question paper design for each paper. The same 2019 FAQ said both papers are on the same syllabus and that Basic is less difficult than Standard.

Class 11: the question that matters most

CBSE's standing rule, restated in its 2025-26 registration circular for Classes 9 and 11, is that students who took Mathematics Basic in Class 10 may not be permitted to take Mathematics (041) in Classes 11 and 12. CBSE's May 2025 circular allowed students who took Mathematics Basic in Class 10 in 2024-25 to take Mathematics (041) in Class 11 from 2025-26. It is not confirmed that this applies to later students, such as those entering Class 11 in 2027-28: we found no CBSE circular extending it. Check with your school before choosing Basic.

Students who took Mathematics Basic in Class 10 can take Applied Mathematics (241) in Class 11. This is CBSE's standing rule (Circular Acad-22/2020), and CBSE's Applied Mathematics FAQ says the same. (Confirmed: Circular Acad-22/2020 and CBSE's Applied Mathematics FAQ.)

In Classes 11 and 12, Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241) cannot be taken together. If Mathematics in Class 11 is likely (for example science with maths, or commerce with maths), Standard keeps that door open.

Who should take which?

  • Standard suits students who may take Mathematics in Class 11, and students who are comfortable with multi-step and case-based problems.
  • Basic suits students who will not take Mathematics in Class 11 and want a paper with more marks for remembering and understanding.
  • Both Class 10 board exams (February and the optional May exam) are on the full syllabus for the year. See how the two board exams work.
  • Your school registers your choice with CBSE, so ask when it needs to know.

Two-minute self-check

Answer honestly. It is a starting point for a talk with your family and teacher, not a decision.

  1. 1. I may want to take Mathematics in Class 11 (for example science with maths, or commerce with maths).
  2. 2. I usually understand a new chapter in class without much extra help.
  3. 3. I can do multi-step word problems and case-based questions.
  4. 4. I usually do well in my school maths tests.
  5. 5. I like working on problems I have not seen before.
  6. 6. I can give maths regular practice time this year.

Questions families ask

Is Basic or Standard still allowed in 2026-27?

Yes. Class 10 students in 2026-27 (board exam in 2027) stay on the existing scheme and may opt for Mathematics Basic. CBSE is discontinuing the Basic and Standard levels after them.

Is the syllabus the same for Basic and Standard?

Yes. Standard (041) and Basic (241) share one Class 10 curriculum document, the NCERT textbook and the same 20-mark internal assessment (pen-paper tests 10, portfolio 5, lab practical 5). The difference is the board paper: Basic has more marks for remembering and understanding, Standard more for applying and higher-order thinking.
